Sponsored adventures in the life of a '1972 MG Midget'
The pride and joy of Hospital Radio Burnley chairperson, John Robinson, his 1972 MG Midget was bought for him by his wife, Penny, as a birthday present...very nice...until you realise that the car came in a number of cardboard boxes. John's second passion to Hospital Radio is classic car rallying. The car has competed in the best competitions and has rewarded John and team with many prizes.
John received the car...(a chassis which comprised of four wheels,a steering wheel and gear box)...the rest, in cardboard boxes, and was like a giant jigsaw to piece together. With help from friends and fellow classic car enthusiasts, Dave Barritt and Bob Williams, they spent many a late night identifying, cleaning and replacing worn out parts. After three years toil, the results were staggering.
To raise much needed funds for Hospital Radio Burnley, John and Bob, have decided to take the car on regular sponsored adventures. Twice visiting Scotland adorned with company names and logo's, have managed to raise over two thousand pounds for the voluntary run radio station. Their next adventure is to take the car into Europe...Brussels has been mentioned...
Local firms have joined in the fundraising event with great enthusiasm. For £50 for a sign on one side of the car and £100 for both sides, the sponsoring companies were queing up to have their logo placed on the car...and the public had the chance to win a fanastic prize by guessing on which mile the car would breakdown at £1 per guess... A 'LCD' television was supplied as first prize by the Burnley Amicus/Unite branch and Asda - Burnley . Although the car made it to John 'o' Groats and back...a 1000 mile round trip...unscathed, all the names were put in a hat and the draw took place at Asda...the winner was Mrs Gallagher of Burnley...Well done!...and a great big thank you to everyone that took part!
